The short version
Your video never leaves your machine. Audio from the sequence you ask to transcribe does — that is the only content sent anywhere. Every render the panel produces (captions, picture-in-picture, glass bubbles, B-roll graphics) happens locally on your computer with your own copy of FFmpeg.
What runs locally
Subtitle text, Premiere project metadata, timeline frames, generated media, and saved transcript edits are processed on your computer. The panel carries no advertising and no third-party trackers, and nothing it records is sold or handed to an ad network.
Generated files and project-scoped caches are stored under your Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/Premiere Assistant Media folder. Transcript caches hold text, timestamps, source fingerprints, and project and sequence identifiers — no audio. Uninstalling the panel deliberately leaves these files in place so your existing projects keep working; you can delete them whenever no project relies on them.
What is sent to the cloud
When you choose Transcribe, audio extracted from the active sequence is sent over HTTPS to the backend service and on to OpenAI solely to produce a transcript. The hosted service operated by Bitfumes Labs does not intentionally persist that audio to a database or object store, discards request data once processing completes, and does not retain the returned transcript.
The AI features that read text rather than audio — chapter generation, transcript refinement, zoom analysis, asset matching, emphasis and B-roll planning — send the relevant transcript text through the same path, under the same handling.
What the panel records about its own use
So we can tell which features earn their place, the panel reports a short list of product events to the backend: the caption style you applied, the feature you clicked or ran, and whether you followed the link to the community group. Each is stored against your account, with the name of the style or feature, your plan status, and the time.
Three milestones — signing in, your first transcript, and your first caption render — are counted separately and anonymously, with your operating system but no account identifier attached. They exist to answer one question: how many people who install the panel reach a finished caption.
What is never recorded: your video, your audio, the transcript or subtitle text, your file or project names, your keystrokes, or anything else on your screen. Only a signed-in panel reports anything at all, and a panel pointed at a self-hosted backend records none of it — there is no account there to attribute an event to.
The website
Separately from the panel, Backstage Cut's website uses Google Analytics to count visits: which pages are read, roughly where in the world the reader is (derived from the IP address, which Google truncates), and which browser and device they used. It sets first-party cookies in your browser to tell a returning reader from a new one.
This is measurement, not advertising: the data is not used to build advertising profiles or target ads, and it is not joined to your account or to anything the panel records. The panel itself does not load Google Analytics — the two are entirely separate. A tracker blocker, or Google's own Analytics opt-out browser add-on, stops it loading.
Accounts and billing
- Signing in with Google stores your email address and a Google account identifier, so the panel can recognise you and meter your usage.
- Transcribed-minute totals are recorded per account. That is what the usage line in the panel reports and what the plan limit is checked against.
- Payments are handled by our payment processor. Card details are never sent to, seen by, or stored by Bitfumes Labs.
Self-hosting
The panel can be pointed at a backend you deploy yourself. In that case audio and transcript handling is governed by that deployment operator's practices and their own OpenAI account, not by this policy — self-hosters are in full control of, and responsible for, their own instance.
Third parties
OpenAI's processing is governed by the terms and data controls applicable to the OpenAI API account used by whichever backend instance is configured. Google Analytics processes the website measurement described above under Google's own policies. Adobe Premiere Pro, the hosting provider, the payment processor, and your operating system are each governed by their own privacy policies.
Your data
Write to support@bitfumes.com to ask what is held against your account, to correct it, or to have the account and its usage records deleted. Deleting the account does not touch the files already on your computer or the edits already in your timeline.
